Find Your Correct Hat Size

What You’ll Need to Measure Your Head

To properly measure your head for a cowboy hat, you’ll need a few basic tools. Don't worry—none of these are specialized tools, and you probably already have them around the house.

1. Flexible Measuring Tape: The best tool for the job is a soft, flexible measuring tape like the kind used by tailors.

2. Mirror or a Friend’s Help: A mirror will help ensure that you're measuring your head at the right angle and level. Alternatively, ask a friend or family member to assist.

3. Pen and Paper: You'll want to jot down your head circumference for reference when ordering your hat.

4. String (Optional): If you don’t have a flexible tape measure, a piece of string and a ruler can be used as a substitute.

Step-by-Step Guide to Measuring Your Head

Step 1: Position the Measuring Tape

Stand in front of a mirror or ask someone to help you. Place the measuring tape around your head, making sure it sits just above your ears and across your forehead. You want the tape to circle around the widest part of your head, which is typically about an inch above your eyebrows.

Step 2: Ensure the Tape is Level

To get an accurate measurement, ensure the tape measure is level all the way around your head. It shouldn't be tilted up or down. Check in the mirror or ask your helper to ensure it's sitting flat.

Step 3: Measure Comfortably

The measuring tape should be snug but not tight. You’re aiming for a comfortable fit that reflects how your hat will feel. If it’s too tight, your hat will be uncomfortable, and if it’s too loose, the hat will slip around.

Step 4: Record Your Measurement

Once you have the tape measure in the correct position and it feels snug but comfortable, take note of the measurement. If you're using a string, mark where the string meets, and then lay it flat and measure it with a ruler. Record the measurement in inches or centimeters, depending on what sizing system the hat retailer uses.

Step 5: Double-Check Your Measurement

To ensure accuracy, repeat the measuring process a couple of times. This will help catch any inconsistencies, especially if it’s your first time measuring your head for a hat
